What is a board?
In a sports club, the board is a group of people who ensure that everything functions correctly. One could say that the board members are the ones who manage and plan the association’s activities.
For example, they decide:
- How training sessions and competitions should operate
- What the association should prioritize
- How funds should be allocated
What do you do on the board?
Being a member of the board means that you help make decisions and take responsibility.
For example, you can:
- Participate in planning the season
- Decide how funds should be spent
- Help arrange coaches or activities
- Attend meetings (usually about once a month)
You serve on the board together with others. Usually, these are unpaid positions, but you gain experience and the opportunity to exert influence.
Who can join?
You can join the board if you:
- Are a member of the association
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Are elected at the annual general meeting
Members can be:
- Active participants (18+)
- Key adults (e.g., parents)
- Coaches or leaders
You do not need to know everything beforehand – you will learn along the way.
Why should you join?
If you want your voice to be heard within the association, the board is an excellent way to do so. It may feel a bit challenging at first, but once you understand how it works, it becomes much easier. Then you can be involved and make a real impact.
As a young person on the board, you can:
- Express your opinions
- Influence decisions
- Represent other active members
- Gain experience for the future
Roles on the board
- Chairperson – leads the meetings and the board’s work
- Treasurer – manages the finances
- Secretary – records what is decided
- Members – participate in discussions and make decisions together with others
Would you like to learn more about how an association can operate?
Take a look at these easy-to-read association documents. Associations operate in broadly similar ways. Perhaps your association can be inspired and create similar documents so that everyone can understand. If you do not understand your context, it is also difficult to have real influence.
