A simple check-in provides the leader with a quick overview of the children’s energy levels before practice. It can also indicate if someone requires additional support during a session or if there are patterns over time that warrant attention.
How it works:
- Upon arrival at practice, the children and all leaders select one or more red, yellow, or green markers (such as an emoji magnet or colored pen) based on their current energy level and place it next to their name on a board. Naturally, it is acceptable to opt out if someone does not wish to participate.
The method is simple, natural, and provides a non-verbal way to express oneself, ensuring children are seen both during individual practices and over time. As a leader, you gain a swift overview of the group’s status and can also perform a check-out in the same manner.
Tip! Use the colors to talk with the group during competitions about how they are feeling—this creates a shared language that makes it easier when it can be difficult to find the right words for a feeling.
