The Common Thread

How it works:

Before the training session, we must be clear about the purpose—that is, why we are doing something—as well as how we will work on it in the upcoming exercises.

  • For example: “Today we are going to practice dribbling the ball. What do you think might be important to keep in mind?”
  • Listen to the children’s answers and reflect back what they say: “Exactly. It is important to run so that you have control of the ball and to look up so you avoid colliding with a friend. Is there anything else that might be good to consider?”
  • Then briefly explain the training session as a whole; the gathering should last no more than a minute at this age.
  • Before different exercises, return to the common thread of the session: “Do you remember the purpose of today’s training? In this exercise, we will continue to work on that… “.
Finally, we conclude the session by connecting it back to the purpose and how you implemented it:
  • “How did it feel today? What will you take away from today’s session? What went well and is something we should continue doing? Is there anything we can keep in mind for the next time we meet?”
  • Relate to matches/competitions: “Does anyone have a suggestion on how we can use what we practiced today during this weekend’s match/competition?”
  • Make this a habit and highlight positive examples from the training session.
