The youth participants establish collective and individual goals for the season or period together with the leaders.
How it works:
- Allocate a training session (or part of one) for goal setting.
- Start in small groups and discuss what we want to achieve as a team/group. For example, “What are we doing well that gives me a positive feeling?”, “What is my strength that I want to continue to use to strengthen the group?”, “What do I/we want to improve?”
- Gather the groups’ thoughts and set common goals (a simple model to work with is SMART, where S stands for specific, M for measurable, A for achievable (important to us), R for realistic, T for time-bound).
- Then, let each young person set their own goal – this can be shared with the group or kept private.
Follow up on the goals regularly based on the group’s discussions. Perhaps it would be good to check in during matches/competitions?!
