The entire session is planned and delivered by the young people themselves. The leader is only present as an observer and support, but may also take part in the session.
How it works:
Once a month, there are “team-led training sessions” where the participants jointly plan a training session. Leaders and coaches are present as a sounding board and provide support:
- Well in advance of the session, the participants decide the session’s purpose and how it will be carried out by choosing drills and a structure (feel free to write down keywords for what should be highlighted and focused on).
- They are assigned a role, as all young people lead different parts of the session. For example, who leads the gathering and briefly explains the purpose and how the session will be carried out; someone can be responsible for equipment or hand out bibs, etc.
- The leader is present but intervenes only if the group needs help or for the participants’ safety—for example, by asking questions and giving them the opportunity to identify for themselves what needs to be addressed.
Evaluation afterwards:
- How did you find being a coach? What worked well? What lessons can we take with us?
